Solar School Bags

Millions of children in Nigeria go home from school to houses without electricity. When the sun sets, homework stops. A Solardero solar school bag charges in the sun on the walk to and from school, then powers an LED light so children can read and study at night.

How it works

What is a solar school bag?

A solar school bag is a sturdy school backpack with a small solar panel built in. During the day it collects sunlight; at night it powers an LED reading light.

It is a safer choice than kerosene lamps or candles: no fumes, no fire risk and no fuel costs for families.

Why it matters

More study time. Safer homes. Clean energy learning.

More study time

Children can do homework and read after sunset, instead of stopping when the sun goes down.

Safer, cheaper homes

No kerosene smoke or fire risk, and no money spent on candles or fuel.

Clean energy learning

Children learn how solar works by using it every day, the first step towards a clean energy future.

Where we have delivered

More than 6,700 children now have a solar school bag.
