Bringing Light and Hope to Yelwata: Solar Lighting for IDP Camps in Nigeria

In June 2025, the Yelwata community in Benue State, Nigeria, experienced a devastating attack that claimed the lives of over 200 people and forced thousands more to flee their homes. Entire families were displaced overnight, leaving behind their livelihoods, belongings, and sense of safety. Today, many survivors—especially women and children—are living in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, struggling to meet their most basic needs.

In the aftermath of this tragedy, access to electricity became one of the most urgent challenges. Darkness in IDP camps does not only mean inconvenience; it increases fear, insecurity, and vulnerability. For families already traumatized by violence and loss, the absence of light makes recovery even harder.

Solar Lighting as a Lifeline for Yelwata Survivors

In response, Solardero Foundation took immediate action to support survivors of the Yelwata attack. Our team visited the Benue State University Teaching Hospital and surrounding IDP camps to deliver solar-powered lighting systems to displaced families.

These solar lights provide more than illumination. They help restore a sense of normalcy and dignity. Mothers can care for their children after sunset. Children can feel safer at night. Families can navigate camp spaces without fear. In communities where grid electricity is unavailable or unreliable, solar lighting for IDP camps in Nigeria becomes a powerful tool for protection, resilience, and hope.

Solar solutions are especially effective in humanitarian settings because they are clean, reliable, and independent of fuel or infrastructure. Once installed, they continue to serve families daily—reducing risk, improving mental well-being, and creating safer environments for recovery.

Why Support for Benue IDP Camps Still Matters

Although emergency relief has reached some survivors, the needs in Benue IDP camps remain immense. Many families still lack:

  • Reliable lighting at night
  • Safe and dignified living conditions
  • Resources to rebuild their lives
  • Emotional and community support

Without light, IDP camps become unsafe after dark—especially for women and children. Solar lighting reduces exposure to violence, supports daily activities, and helps restore a sense of control for displaced families.

Your support allows Solardero Foundation to expand this work by providing more solar lights, reaching more camps, and supporting long-term recovery efforts in vulnerable communities across Nigeria.
